The capital city of Switzerland, Zurich, has been adjudged the smartest city in the world five times in a role following the release of the Smart City Index released by the International Institute of Management Development (IMD).
The International Institute for Management Development (IMD) compiles an annual list of the world’s smartest cities, evaluating each city’s economic and technological capabilities and how they improve quality of life and address social challenges. Now in its fifth year, the Smart Cities Index 2024 has gathered data from residents in 142 cities to gauge their perspectives on their city’s health and safety, mobility, activities, opportunities, and governance.
There is no single African or North American city in the list of the first 20 smart cities in the world.
The first African city on the list is Cairo, the capital of Egypt, ranked 114th.
