Tim Robbins has urged conspiracy theorists to stop linking his 1992 film “Bob Roberts” to the recent attempted assassination of former President Trump.
The film, a political satire made three decades ago, features a storyline where a political candidate fakes an assassination attempt to boost his electoral prospects. Robbins responded to some claims suggesting that the recent incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, was a similar political maneuver.
“To anyone drawing a parallel between my film Bob Roberts and the attempted assassination of Trump, let’s be clear. What happened yesterday was a real attempt on a presidential candidate’s life.”
In “Bob Roberts,” which Robbins wrote, directed, and starred in, the protagonist is a right-wing politician vying for a U.S. Senate seat.
“Those that are denying the assassination attempt was real are truly in a deranged mindset,” Robbins continued in his post.
“A human being was shot yesterday. Another killed,” he pointed out. “They may not be human beings that you agree with politically but for shame folks.”
During the incident, Trump sustained an ear injury, and firefighter Corey Comperatore was fatally shot. Additionally, David Dutch, 57, from New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and James Copenhaver, 74, from Moon Township, Pennsylvania, were critically injured but are now stable, according to a state police press release.
Robbins concluded his message with a plea for unity.
“Get over your blind hatred of these people. They are fellow Americans,” he urged. “This collective hatred is killing our souls and consuming whatever is left of our humanity.”
