EU defense ministers agree on largest-ever joint military support commitment
European Union defense ministers have agreed on a landmark military aid package for Ukraine totaling 12 billion euros, the largest single commitment from the bloc since Russia's full-scale invasion began.
The comprehensive package includes advanced air defense systems, artillery ammunition, armored vehicles, and funding for Ukrainian defense industry production. For the first time, the EU will also provide long-range precision munitions from joint European stockpiles.
"Europe is sending an unmistakable message: we stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes," said the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs at a press conference in Brussels.
The agreement also includes provisions for ramping up European defense production, with plans to triple ammunition output by the end of the year. New production lines are being established in Poland, the Czech Republic, and France to meet the growing demand.
The unanimous agreement came after intense negotiations, with some member states initially reluctant to commit such significant resources. The deal represents a shift in European security thinking, with even traditionally neutral countries like Austria and Ireland backing the package.
